The HBKU Student Center is located at the center of six university campuses in Doha, Qatar.
This beautiful student union building was struggling to serve its purpose due to a lack of students using the facilities available.
I took this project because I wanted students to have an enriched college experience.
I acted as Lead Designer and Project Manager on this project.
Some of the skills used in this project were Research, Facilitation, Branding and Prototyping.
The research phase consisted of user interviews and literature review on the history of college unions. The literature review helped me find how the purpose of student union buildings had evolved over time, and the user interviews helped me in figuring out users' perceptions about the HBKU Student Center.
The research had given me a broad range of concepts to work with. In the comprehension phase I narrowed down areas for ideation through concept maps and identifying key stakeholders.
The Ideation phase involved co-creation with the stakeholders to help them envision their perfect idea of the building. The five major principles of service design (useful, usable, efficient, effective & desirable) were considered during prototyping.
The final deliverable was a physical booklet that detailed the research findings, the design process and the recommendations.
These included changes in the physical space, internal communications as well as outreach practices.
